Raleigh was laid out in 1792 on 1,000 acres bought from Joel Lane, platted by William Christmas around five public squares, and in the more than two centuries since, the city has weathered the same Piedmont storm pattern that affects the whole region — summer thunderstorms and periodic hurricane-remnant rainfall.
